U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk takes up fight for Bahá'í rights

Rep. Mark Kirk, R-10th and Wilmette-area Bahá'ís are speaking out against what they say is a stepped up campaign of persecution against Bahá'ís in Iran, the birthplace of the religion. The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a bi-partisan resolution authored by Kirk and New Jersey Democrat Rob Andrews condemning arsons, detentions and other forms of intimidation they say has worsened over the past year.

Following the baseless accusations thrown by Tehran’s deputy prosecutor, in which he alleged that the 7 arrested Baha'i leaders forged links with Israel, Shirin Ebadi - the famed lawyer, human rights activist and Nobel Laureate - made a brave decision to defend them before court.

Local Bahá'ís seek to promote faith and religious unity

Vahid Manie-Oskoii, a business administration major at the University, believes in Jesus. And Muhammed. And Krishna and Buddha, too. Manie-Oskoii is a member of the Bahá'í faith, a religion centered around the idea that we're all united, spiritually.

"We actually believe in all of the religions," Manie-Oskoii said. "There's only one God and he sends prophets or messengers, if you will, for different times throughout the world."

Student denied entry to exams because of religion

Kholoud Hafez Abdou is a 17 years old Egyptian student who, like all other students in her stage of education, must sit for the final exams that allow her to graduate from high school and enter university education.
